Lioness, a band formed in late 2007 in Toronto, are a band that has managed to carve out a distinctive voice of their own. Vanessa Fischer [the front woman] has a voice similarly clear and cutting as the voice of Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
The majority of the songs start with haunting electronica sounds, which boil up from silence into a wall of synthesized madness. A good way to start the EP’s first track “You’re My Heart”, but this anonymous noise becomes worn all too quickly.
The EP’s opening track “You’re My Heart” is a drum and bass driven anthem, encapsulating every good aspect of Lioness’s sound in one package. It is really hard not to get addicted to this chorus. Some may find the repetitive lyrics in this song lazy however, it just adds to this song’s overall appeal. Lioness probably aim to have their melodies imprisoned within all listeners’ minds.
Next comes “Harder They Fall” with a meagre [for Lioness at least] 10 second electronic intro leading into the somehow haunting vocals soaring over [again] drums and bass. The middle section of this song shows how really strong a sound this band has. Everything sounds like it has a clear direction, and when a song finishes you are always left wanting more.
If you do want more, there is plenty of the same on this 5-track EP as songs barely differ from each other. However, as its only a 5-track EP I’m sure the band can be forgiven for simply stating what they are about. Watch this space.
