Tin Soldiers' single ‘Wait For You’ released at the end of last year has been sitting on my desk for a few weeks now and despite a whole series of listening sessions to the record, I am, unfortunately, not taken by it although I cannot really fault the record.

After receiving negative feedback for a previous negative review I have been trying to merit ‘Wait For You’ to the level it genuinely deserves and there is a lot to credit to generic pop punk; especially this long after the pop punk phenomenon that gripped the western world back when the masses were blessed with Blink 182’s Enema of the State. It’s hard to imagine anyone getting this type of music wrong and Tin Soldiers have given it a fair crack [which is commendable] regardless of the lack of integrity the music appears to possess, some bands just cannot get enough.

‘Wait For You’ is a highly produced, bland, pop punk song, layered with thick vocal harmonies - I guess unison melodies count as harmonies? Whitehouse’s preachy “Surrender, surrender, forever…..I’ll wait for you” over the chorus justifiably emphasises the same old boring pop punk we’ve heard for the last decade. It reminded me of Jon Lajoie’s closing line “S**t in my mouth, and I’ll puke it all over your face……(whisper) I love you”. This track would be a classic choice for the last moments of Scrubs when the protagonist is realising the error of his ways and only cheesy pop punk can help him express his emotions through it's associated power chords and woo woos!

When looking at the music, the performance is high, the parts are well written, the relationship between instrumental lines and roles within the band are well adjusted giving the track a strong overall feel. In all honesty there’s nothing wrong with the track. I for one am just done with this type of music, but as I always say, I’m sure there are loads of people out there that will hear this on the radio and hum away all day to the catchy melodies and repetitive choruses.

If you like pop punk you may like this. If you like 70's fusion Progressive Rock it’s probably not your cup of tea. If you own any Tom Waits records then go running for the hills - you will probably hate this. On the flip side if you like Blink 182, New Found Glory or maybe even Farewell then Tin Soldiers might just be your cup of tea.
