Lithurgy - Self Titled (EP)

I first discovered Lithurgy though my brother, who knows some of the guys in the band. I then one day managed to see them at one their shows. What can I say but wow! It’s very rare to see a new band and be completely blown away by their songs on a first listen. Lithurgy are full of energy and fire, blending a variety of metal together to create a rounded sound, ranging from tech, prog metal, through metalcore and moving through to more melodic sounds. Lithurgy’s influences are some times quite obvious and an extensive list can be found on their myspace page.

The best part of this mass influence is that there is a lot of variety. Some bands take influence from 1 or 2 bands and they end up being cheap rip offs of them. The vocals range from hard screaming and growling, in an Anselmo/Randy Blythe style, to softer singing, likened more to someone like Alexisonfire. The only problem I have with this EP is that it’s only 3 tracks long. I want more! There is a great deal of variation across the three tracks, the stand out track being, ‘Absolute Truth’, a heavy number with a Tool/Sikth-esq style melodic break down. The main riff grinds along like a Gojira riff.

These Brighton boys have proved their ability technically and sonically, to produce something a little bit special. They need to take this and run with it. I’d be very interested to hear what they could do dynamically with a full-length release. All upcoming metal bands need to watch out for these guys as they are setting the standard.
