Trap Them waste no time in showing you what they are about. From the second Seizures in Barren Praise starts you are engulfed in this amazing wall of sound. The styling is based on 80’s punk and hardcore, but pushed towards the metal side, called d-beat hardcore, then mixed with some splintering grind style drumming. This is not easy listening metal; it’s aggressive and brutal.
One of the first bands I liken Trap Them too, is Converge, which then comes at no surprise to know that they are signed to Converge singer Jacobs label Deathwish Inc. The main influences are older bands, the likes of Entombed, Black Flag and Dismemberment. The guitar tone is sharp and cutting but nowhere near as much as the harsh throat shredding screams of singer Ryan McKenney. That guy really does have a giant set between his legs. His persisting, relentless screams question the ability of the human body.
The collective use of these sounds gives Trap Them a brutal harsh sound. But because they are all on the same wavelength, they channel this towards a powerful blast of sound. The songs are well written and recorded. The hardcore influence on the sound gives you more clarity over the average grind band, whose riffs may be more thrashy. Trap Them don’t do anything original but what they do is create a great sound with oodles of passion and aggression.
