Frightened Rabbit - Quietly Now! - Midnight Organ Fight Live And Acoustic (Album)

FatCat Records - Out March 30th

Recorded in July 2008 at Glasgow's most intimate of venue's The Captain's Rest 'Quietly Now!' sees Frightened Rabbit unleash their 2nd album 'The Midnight Organ Fight' in a more stripped-down acoustic form which fails to diminish the album instead invoking a more emotional response from singer Scott Hutchison and embellishing the tracks with a new sense of rawness and power. It's a trick I don't think many acts could pull off but by setting it in their spiritual home of Glasgow; in front of a small but passionate crowd, Frightened Rabbit have made the perfect companion to the full-blown studio album.

Jumping straight in with 'The Modern Leper' it's hard to separate it from the studio version with little if any crowd input it's done to the band to try and alter the perception of the track and this is most recognisable in Scott's vocal delivery which is edgy and fraught with a sense of him reaching for something just out of reach. 'Good Arms Vs. Arms' is more of a departure and again this is due to the vocals as musically there is a continued similarity but there's a sense of urgency when Scott sings "And leave the rest at arms length/I'm not ready to see you this happy/And leave the rest at arms length/I'm still in love with you, can't admit it yet".

Good Arms Vs. Bad Arms - Live

Delivering a still quite pulsating 'Fast Blood' there's still not getting away from this tracks immediacy even when trying to take things down a notch as the line "This is the longest kiss/Goodnight" still resonates. Glasgow local Ross Clark joind for 'Old Old Fashioned' with the wry joke that he can pull anything from his behind "A mandolin from Ross's arse!" ah the banter.

Bypassing altogether 'Bright Pink Bookmark' and 'Extrasupervery' seems a wise choice as they are imbued with a more orchestral nature and would be be a bit unusual in the acoustic context and only seek to slow down the album which rattles along nicely. Personal fave 'Head Rolls Off' with it's genius lyric "Jesus is just a Spanish boy's name/How come one man got so much fame?" doesn't quite relate to the album version but here it has a much softer almost lullaby quality to it. The same can't quite be said about 'Backwards Walk' with it's refrain of 'You're the shit and I'm knee deep in it".

The Twilight Sad's James Graham joins for the organ led 'Keep Yourself Warm' that gets the crowd having a pub sing-along to the immortal line "You won't find love in a/Won't find love in a hole/It takes more than fucking someone/To keep yourself warm" just the sort of line Glaswegian's can get their teeth into believe me. Both 'Poke' and 'Floating In The Forth' are ideal candidates for the acoustic treatment and are sublimely recreated here to almost haunting effect.

Frightened Rabbit hit the road again in March for a series of acoustic shows and I would urge you all to seriously consider making the trip as this is a band that will snap your synapses but in the most beautiful of ways - I'll be heading along hopefully see you there we can do some synapse repair together.
