Science vs Romance’s recent EP Life Through Your Eyes is occupied by 4 very listenable, danceable, grungy punk pop tracks , with clever and witty lyrics and old school guitar solos for good measure.
First tune, ‘Out of Luck’, strays nicely into branches of early Weezer but with a distinctly British feel. This track is easy to listening to while still encompassing some respectable guitar solos and harsh-ish lyrics, and I’m impressed how these guys make all aspects quite decent, proving they have a solid ground to build on.
‘Black Coffee’ has a retro feel to it, the drawn out guitar gives me flashes of Sixteen Candles before being brought back to the 00’s with a sufficient beat and lyrics just hopeful enough so I’m not tempted to lend my knickers to someone to show off in the boys bathroom. And here’s a new 6 degrees challenge, song about black coffee into a love ballad…
‘Standing in the Footsteps of Giants’ isn’t as good as the other 2 tracks so far, showcasing a pitchier tendency to lead singer, Matthew Vale’s vocals. The formula for this track is pretty standard, it’s not so bad I want to turn it off, but it’s not that good for me to want to turn it up either. A notable moment is the cute tinkering in the middle third in between the unnecessarily blah teenage beginning and end.
‘1968’ has my hopes high that it will tap into the definitive 60’s vibe. I was wrong. I feel no need to burn my bra at all. Disappointing.
The track has spiteful lyrics (“You can count on me/to hurt your feelings”) and is just shy of catchy. I imagine the fans of this track dress in skinny black jeans, wear eyeliner and need a haircut.
Overall, Life Through Your Eyes isn’t bad, and I can absolutely see these guys making a substantial impact if things go their way. And I would say Science vs Romance are worthy of at very least an inkling of your attention if you want to sound cool to your friends when you ‘liked this winner back before they even existed’.
