Now I thought Glen Campbell was the guy who used to present a kids TV show on a Sunday morning?!? Clearly this isn't the same guy as the aforementioned is dead and this Glen Campbell is covering Foo Fighters and Green Day - as you do! This Glen Campbell is claimed to be (and I say this because I really have no idea) a "bonafide living legend". I guess he did spend time with The Beach Boys so that's good enough for me.
So what is this album all about? Well, it's one of those comeback albums like we had from Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond whereby old singer-songwriters return to reinterpret songs by more modern artists. I guess it's a good way of bringing in new, younger, and fresher audiences. It clearly worked for Cash so how does Mr.Campbell get on?
'Meet Glen Campbell' is actually an OK album to just fling on in the background as he's selected a decent blend of songs to wrap his very Neil Diamond a-like vocals around. Travis' 'Sing' becomes an almost Xmas sing-along, Foo Fighters 'Times Like These' gets the over-the-top country treatment sounding kind of like Capmbell's 'Rhinestone Cowboy', U2's 'All I Want Is You' sounds like an ageing Bono crooning in the future supplemented with Banjo Yee-Haw, whilst Grenn Day's 'Good Riddance' is the sort of song you could appropriate Campbell's stylings with. It's simple acoustic and vocal - unfortunately here it's given a more up-tempo beat and extra layered instrumentation than really seems necessary which for me detracts from the track.
Whilst not every song on this album works with the Glen Campbell country treatment, all of the songs are interesting interpretations. In reality, country music doesn't gel with everything and there are moments in this album that certainly highlights this fact.
This would make a great gift for your dad or your nan.
