Picture yourself in a log cabin, snow outside, hot cuppa in your paws and a roaring fire at your feet. Not a care in the world, this is where 'One Way To Be Alone' transports you. Beautiful harmonious vocals, charming guitar notes and well driven drumming are endless in this record. The three way harmonies play with your emotions and tickle at the essence of life. Some may describe this music as "Camp-fire" or "Camping" music, it certainly sets the scene. An interesting thought comes to mind upon listening through the record. What would the live shows be like? Maybe at a sit-down event, or festivals this material would work well? Put this band in some venues however and this could be a bore on many levels.
In a previous interview with Altsounds.com, Good Old War described their sound as "Harmony", this is definitely the right word to use. Their use of 'Harmony' is very inviting, two way, three way, anyway is good (that's what she said). One other word that could be used is "Nice". They all have a great sense of warmth that produce thoughts of big grass mountains and snowy hill tops. How glorious.
One track does let the album down a little. 'Weak Man' sounds like something Mcfly would conjure up as a kick in the face to the disgrace that is the main stream music industry. 'Weak Man' just so happens to be their single release off the album aswell! Some of the other tracks can get a little samey and may cause the premature flicking of the fast forward [this only occurs when listening too hard to the record]. "One Way To Be Alone" is definitely best suited as background music or would make a perfect 'bed time album'. Good Old War have kept each track very simple, comprising of the usual vocals, drums, guitar, with the odd other instrument thrown in for good measure, making sure that it doesn't clutter the sound. Good Old War seem to have their formula just about right; acoustic tunes with the satisfactory equivalence of a warm bath with the perfect amount of bubbles. 'Stay By My Side' features a female vocalist that brings the album to a wonderful end. If your not a happy person, you will be after listening to this track!
This is an album you can play in the background with no worries of your gran throwing that steaming hot cuppa all over your face. Listen to this whilst riding a bike too, it makes sense.
