The Freezing Fog return to deliver their second album since their formation in early 2006, as the Mancunian five piece attempt to take the modern music world by storm. The self-titled record reflects just how far The Freezing Fog have come in three years.
The album begins with the excellent ‘In the Company of a Genius’, which proves to be a thoroughly enjoyable welcome to the album. The energetic feel to the track is accompanied beautifully with soft inoffensive vocals which don’t try and dominate the record.
The album continues in a similar vein with ‘The Dweller upon the Threshold of Time’ which is a classic ‘nod your head, tap your feet’ song. Once again the vocals fit the track perfectly with The Freezing Fog’s excellent band chemistry beginning to shine through.
The Freezing Fog continue to impress with their ability to provide a real variety of rock ‘n roll. The more aggressive ‘Eagle’ is a thousand miles away from the slower, darker instrumental ‘Virga’, yet both tracks are a joy to listen to with their clever build up and devastating execution. The Freezing Fog seem to have a real knack for producing exceptional intros as the majority of the tracks on this album provide just that.
‘Dusk Chorus Blues’ has a somewhat funky style to it, with dual vocals heard for the first time. The riffs continue to impress and the drumbeat holds a steady rhythm as it has throughout the previous tracks. The album closes with ‘Horizons’ which doesn’t particularly stand out as a great individual song but fits nicely with the rest of The Freezing Fog’s work.
The overall self titled album can be described as a throwback to the classic rock of the eighties with a modern day twist thrown in for good measure. The Freezing Fog have done brilliantly well and I await more of their work with extremely eager ears.
