Justice – A Cross The Universe [CD & DVD]
The coolest duo to emerge from France brandishing impressive facial hair since Asterix et Obelix; Parisians Justice have been climbing the ladder of success at astonishing pace for the last twelve months. Their appeal is widespread – dance fans, indie kids, metalheads and even scenesters (shockhorror!) alike have all fallen to the feet for mutual worship. Their cut-paste-attack-decay cool ass funk acid bass and home-made synth reliant music has had an addictive effect on the world over and their debut record, simply entitled ‘†’ was unanimously popular with critics upon its release in 2007.
Did they stop there? Did they hell.
The pun-tastically titled ‘A Cross The Universe’ is a CD & DVD release documenting Justice’s travels promoting said record. Although it’s worth pointing out that it is ‘A Cross The World’ rather than as stated, ‘The Universe’. If its groundbreaking footage of black holes, aliens with Picasso’d faces and meteors that you’re after then this probably isn’t the DVD for you. In fact, if you’re that type, ‘A Cross The Universe’ will probably highly offend you as it shows textbook rock and roll behaviour of musicians on tour. I could spend about fifteen pages telling you about how good this DVD is, but nobody wants that so just take my word for it when I tell you to go out and buy it ASAP. As you’re online, head to Amazon and pick it up RIGHT now. Yes, actually now.
If you’re still reading this, you clearly need more convincing (stubborn %$&*%*) so here’s a (very) brief summary of the DVD – the world’s deepest voiced bus driver, a drunken Vegas wedding with bums as guests, fights, highway gun toting, fans embarrassing themselves, viewing of ridiculously priced houses, a muscular freak in what looks like intense pain, Xavier De Rosnay trying to set a drunken slag alight, said lunatic bottling a stranger then being met by police after the set, boobs, a man with a handlebar moustache scoring with countless 20-something women in every town, a homeless man rapping, feeding a pigeon Nurofen, serenading a highly unimpressed Anthony Kiedis with his own song, amazing footage of live sets that make you wish that you had been there and of course, a fat kid singing along to ‘We Are Your Friends’.
If that last one didn’t do it for you, stop reading now.
The live CD that accompanies the DVD is too a great purchase. It’s been in my car since December now and I am yet to get bored of it. Live remixes of classics ‘D.A.N.C.E’, ‘Phantom’ (Parts 1&2), Soulwax’s ‘NY Excuse’, ‘Waters OF Nazereth’, opener ‘Genesis’ and even Metallica’s ‘Master Of Puppets’ ensure that the usually dreary M4 feels like an illegal rave every time.
If you love Altsounds and the majority of the music featured on the site, then I’m pretty confident that ‘A Cross The Universe’ is ‘your kind’ of DVD.
Très bien Justice – un DVD vraiment excellent.
