I find that there's something deliriously joyful about New Rhodes, they write nice and simple straight-forward indie/pop songs that are just so easy on the ear, James Williams has the sort of voice that conjures up images of Morrissey if he was a sweet little boy who liked steak and chasing girls around town whilst giggling like a school-boy i.e. pretty much a happy-bunny. Add to that their choppy wave pop guitar hooks and grab you by the face with a vacuum cleaner rhythm section and you have 3 minute pop perfection that doesn't need semi-naked, out of tune, pretending to be teenage girls like most 3 minute pop tunes of this day and age.
'The Joys...' is quintessentially British and having fun at it as well, about something we all have experience of, you know the hunt for that special person in your life and the joy that comes with that, tempered with the sensibility of finding out they just aren't who they seemed and the joy (joy, really?!?!) that comes with that lucky escape. Set to the soundtrack that is part almost ska groove and the sheer in your face indie drum n' riff indie/pop.
Simply listen to this if you need a little brightening up and even the most ardent of industrial/goth/metal/stabbed-with-a-spike-rock fan needs a little brightening up in their life that teasing puppies just can't bring.
