Pulled Apart By Horses – I Punched A Lion In The Throat CD Single

Taking their name from a demented torture method, you might be a little wary of what to expect before listening to Pulled Apart By Horses, but fear not, the greatness is to come! Hailing from Leeds, Pulled Apart By Horses who are Tom Hudson (Vocals/Guitar), James Brown (Guitars), Lee Vincent (Drums) and Robert Lee (Bass) have created a disturbingly good single here. ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ CD single which is out on the ‘Too Pure’ label not only boats the title track but also contains an equally ear blasting song ‘The Crapsons.’ Both of these two tracks are so fierce that once you listen to them, you’re likely to feel like you have been completely and utterly torn apart by some musical soul eating reaper.

‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ contains an opening guitar sequence that not only electrifies you immediately, it will have you or maybe more accurately your ears transfixed to listen to the rest of the song. The riff itself is extremely catchy and after listening to ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ I simply cannot get that damn riff out of my head, in fact I think I’ll still be humming it in 20 years time!

‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ is hard to deconstruct, its 3.14 minutes of raw, full of energy, brash, throw-yourself-around-the-room-music, that somehow is beautifully melodic at the same time. Don’t under estimate it though because that ferocity will come and smack you in the face with the power of a heavyweight boxer, when you’re least expecting it! In fact perhaps more apt, go and punch a lion in the throat and when it attacks you, that’s the same power this song contains!

It’s quite obvious that after listening to Pulled Apart By Horses’ ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ they have a favourable admiration for bands like Nirvana among others, although this is not at all a bad thing and these influences really shine through in the song. However, where as some bands sway to not being unique, Pulled Apart By Horses really do possess a distinctive sound. You can’t second guess where ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ is going either, when you think you’ve got it, off it goes into another direction. A refreshing sound and a nice antidote to some of the current mundane bands on the airwaves right now.

The second track on the single is ‘The Crapsons’ which still maintains the punky, grungy feel that is inherent in ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’. Although ‘The Crapsons’ seems a little less your friend, it’s altogether a tad bit darker. It still contains the snarling, slurring vocals of lead singer Tom Hudson and opens with a guitar chord which if it were a bird, would be an angry bird of pray that would be scratching your eyes out.

‘The Crapsons’ is the time when you’re at a gig being smashed around by the most severe mosh-pit, its that time when you’re wondering whether you're going to live or die, you’re on the edge, you're hot, you're finding it difficult to breathe and stand up, but you know you’re still enjoying it, the song is simply that intense. As with ‘I Punched A Lion In The Throat’ the song has deep distinctivity and easily keeps the listener guessing, it jumps from one direction to another like a cricket on speed. Many bands when they do this can loose their musical structure, however it seems quite the opposite with Pulled Apart By Horses, it adds their sense of lunacy! I love this track, simply for the fact that it has an endless abundance of energy!

So to wrap up, I’ll see you by the speakers, hanging from the ceiling or whatever is left of the roof!

'I Punched A Lion In The Throat' is out now, so what you waiting for? Go and get it and give your ears some audio pleasure...
