The opening track of Ume’s debut Sunshower EP, “East of Hercules”, starts off a little worryingly [sounding like Editors], but thankfully that’s the last time the comparison can be made! The latest band to arrive off Austin’s rather prolific production line, Ume (pronounced ooo-may), are Lauren Larsen (vocals/guitar), Eric Larson (bass) and Jeff Barrera (drums), and together they sound like the wonderful marriage of Blonde Redhead and Throwing Muses [when in fact they are the literal marriage of Lauren and Eric].

Each song is precise, straight-up rock n roll, with small traces of shoegaze that never overstay their welcome [album highlight “Pendulum” is the longest at 4 minutes 17 seconds]. Lauren Larsen’s vocals fit the bill perfectly, sultry and seductive in the verse, husky and raspy when the big chorus’ kick in.

Sunshower is a fine debut from Ume, filled with enough promise to make many people’s anticipation for their first full length understandable to say the least. Recording begins in June I believe - no pressure guys.
