After months of having this album to review, I finally get around to it. I listened to it once, when I first received Twelve Steps and was completely indifferent to it. I didn't know what to write and the CD fell beneath my bed, among the dirty laundry and dead animals and began gathering dust. Today, I blow the dust off and listen to it again, the reason being, that I was obligated to review it at some point and people were beginning to question my commitment. "It's only been 4 months," I reply, "Do I have to listen to it again already?"
On the surface, Twelve Steps seems to be a rather basic turntable based album, but the more I listen to it, the more faults I find with it, and the more I dislike it. Considering that my opinions of it were pretty low to begin with, it's not got much going for it!
Lots of the sounds are like they're lifted straight from superior music [they may well have been] and completely ruined. It's as if someone took a picture of my girlfriend and photoshopped the face of a really ugly girl right over the top. Songs like 'Broke Ass Nigga' just make me despair. Not only is the musical temperament transposed directly from the bottom of the late-80s-early-90s barrel, but it continues to push tired old clichés, failing to engage me in any way.
Tittsworth are a touring DJ and Producer set and this is surely where their talents lie. It just doesn't work on a CD. Tittsworth are apparently loved in their home town of Baltimore, and I don't dispute this, but Tittsworth need to do a lot more to impress me. Each song seems to be devised from one particular song that existed before. From Beastie Boys - Triple Trouble to NWA - Give me something to dance to and some others that I recognise, but can't remember where from, this album has it all in terms of slight plagiarism. As I say, I don't know if this is a deliberate thing, but it sure annoys me.
If you are a die-hard DJ based music fan, you may be able to get some pleasure from the album [maybe using it as a Frisbee, or you may just be fascinated that you can see your reflection in the shiny surface] but others should maybe steer clear.
Listen to this album: Perhaps live, with the guys right in front of you.
