Hindsight is a bitch! After countless attempts to contact the venue to make sure I was on the guestlist, I decided to take the plunge and head on down anyway. There has never been a problem before, so I was sure tonight would be no different. How wrong I was. After receiving the bad news I went outside to call my +1, when luckily, or so I thought at the time, a rather generous young lady approached me and offered me two free tickets. This was especially generous seeing as the night was sold out (naturally I thanked her with a drink inside). Now all of this meant I missed Bear Hands and most of Hockey but hey, at least I got to see the main event, Passion Pit, the band who warmed my winter late last year with their debut EP, Chunk of Change. Sadly this is where I could have done with the benefit of hindsight, as then I might not have taken those free tickets and kept my rather glowing impression of Passion Pit intact. Chunk of Change had filled me with Dickens sized expectations, both for this gig and their debut full length due out later this year, but rather disappointingly these expectations were not met (following on from my guestlist surprise, it seemed to be the night for this). Now it must be stated that they were slightly hamstrung by some poor sound, but despite this their set seemed lacking in something. Vim? panache ? Whatever you want to call it, there was some extra perk missing that Chuck of Change was simply awash with. Although it was the tracks from said EP that stood out, they failed to sparkle like the diamonds they are, with only “Sleepyhead” coming close enough. Even EP highlight “I’ve got Your Number” couldn’t buck the trend, indeed as second song in it pretty much set the tone. If your best song disappoints, then you’re struggling from there on in. In many ways though it was the new songs that disappointed the most, because if they are what will make up part of the debut album, it’s going to be hard for Passion Pit to build on the great promise of Chunk of Change. Whilst I don’t want to be guilty of premature evaluation here, none of the new tracks stood out as worthy of a place on Chunk of Change, which is, whether they like it or not, the bar they have set for themselves.
