Exploding onto the alternative/experimental/post-hardcore scene with some incredible musicianship and downright aggressive behavior, Resonate are fecking cool. From start to finish, 'Curvatures' rips through the boundaries of whats physically and mentally possible. Instant references to At The Drive-in, Biffy Clyro, Reuben, Funeral For A Friend appear in opening track 'Blueprints Under Out Skin'. Lead singer Ed Bidgood squeals and wines through the tracks in a style very close to Circa Survive's Anthony Green. His style seems to resemble Cedric in the early days of At The Drive-In, but with less aggression and a subtle softness. This style of vocal delivery can be very temperamental, getting it right live has to be spot on, over-wise shoe gazing will occur in the crowd.
The band have worked their way through various dirty venues throughout the UK, delivered an excellent first EP and pushed the boundaries of music. This album is a tribute to their talent.
Musically this record is unbelievable. Every twang, drum hit, cymbal crash, bass thunder is tighter than a nun's purse. Their talent is impeccable for such a young band, track 5 "This Is Subjective Not Objective" gushes their tight musicianship in a "Living Is a Problem Because Everything Dies" intro/exit stylee. Featuring tight snare hits alongside some crazy guitar strumming. "Are We Giants Or Matchstick Men?" is a potential single for Resonate. It's 3min04sec of well written prog/emo, slightly resembling Idiot Pilot's crazy work. At times the tracks go off into a tangent of instrumental works, that fankly, are bloody brilliant. The band could easily hold up their hands a say "we don't need a vocalist to be good". A personal favourite, is the last song on the album "I'll Be Autumn, You Be Winter". Just over 8mins of Mogwai/This Will Destroy You workings, with only a few words "He asked himself the same old questions" wailed out with some epic guitar reverb. This is one track you can't get tired of, each listen reveals a new level of ambiance, a new world order in music writing.
The only criticizing factor to this record is the production. Sometimes is sounds shit hot, others it sounds weaker than it can be. 'Curvatures' has the potential to be an outstandingly crafted powerful prog piece. Put them in a studio with Terry Date (Funeral For A Friend) or Sean Genockey (Reuben) and this would be gobsmacking.
If this is the younger generation of new bands, then God help anyone trying to put something together. These lads stand out above the rest of their generation of new bands. Resonate have set the bar ridiculously high with this, so well done chaps.
