Syntheme – Lazers ‘N’ Shit [Album]

Syntheme – Lazers ‘N’ Shit [Album]

Planet Mu Records

Lazers ‘N’ Shit is the second album by Syntheme on Planet Mu and is straight up acid. Lazers ‘N’ Shit has a Roland TR 808 at its heart and of course a TB 303 for its soul. The whole album is acid, and it never pretends to be anything else, which some may say, is a pity.

Lazers ‘N’ Shit covers acid house, acid electro and acid techno, and does so with aplomb. If you are looking for something new or different, then you wont find it here. If, however, you are looking for some head melting, heart bouncing acid, you will definitely find it on Lazers ‘N’ Shit.

Syntheme’s album is for the dancefloor, for the club, or for that acid inspired party. It, unfortunately, doesn’t venture anywhere else and by the end of listening, you will either be in 303 heaven, staring at the stars, or at the toilet getting to know your dinner a little more intimately. When Lazers ‘N’ Shit veers into darker territory we can see why Syntheme has garnered so much respect from her acid peers. We also see [an example track being “Red”] that there is a little disco influence thrown in for good measure.

There are some very catchy melodies throughout and some very sweet synth programming in Syntheme’s artillery, which is why we are left dreaming of what she could achieve if she delved further into the disco electro themes of “Red” a little more [or even into the darker German techno ispired themes of “Mexicone”]. This six minute epic is probably the stand out track, and we are left wondering what would happen if Syntheme explored this side of her personality more.

Throughout the album we hear the customary 808/303 partnership, which for some, is getting a bit long in the tooth. This partnership has indeed stood the test of time, and will probably do so for a while longer as it is only when the volume is up loud that you start to understand their effects properly.

Lazers ‘N’ Shit
, doesn’t veer anywhere else except acid, and for a mindboggling 20 tracks, Syntheme offers up all that is acid. For those who have that certain fetish, you will wet your pants at Syntheme’s offering: a female artist who knows how to work her machines! For others this will be a pain in the head.

Undoubtedly though, most of these tracks will work in the club, and Syntheme will get her dues from the DJ’s. We have to realize that the ubiquitous 808/303 partners in crime will always have a place in electronic music, and Syntheme will probably sit at the top of the tree [or near to it].

Personally, though, I would love it if she branched out a little. Then we may see Syntheme raise herself and her sublime chord sequences to a whole new level of resonance altogether.
