Lavolta Records
The millstone of 'hot new band' can a difficult one for any young group to bear or escape. But on the second single from “Fine Fascination”, Red Light Company don’t sound intimidated. Following echoing solitary piano chords, “Arts and Craft” explodes into full-on epic indie-rock. It is so wide screen it will fill your room wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor. So far so Editors (so Arcade Fire, so White Lies etc).
It is undeniably exhilarating with arms-aloft-anthem written all over it. But the anthem falls apart and the arms sag when you start to unpick what the song is trying to say. The main theme is as prosaic as: at school “I wasn’t good at arts and crafts”. It’s not deep, nor nostalgic, nor emotional. Musically it punches well above its weight. Lyrically and emotionally it’s not even a jab in ribs.
Red Light Company will be a huge radio-friendly festival hit this summer no doubt, but I wait to see if they have depth or stamina to out-live the ‘hot’ tag.
