What's your favourite soul song? Now narrow it down to British origin. If you have more than one, then you're doing well. Narrow it further to one released within the past 10 years. If you still have more than one, hats off to you. The big question is, are you the only one who still remembers it? The point I'm intending to make is that there are very few British soul artists out there that have kept their music consistently good and with that been popular to the masses in the past decade. With such an enormous influx of pop, samey indie rock and generic hip hop, certain genres have been left behind in the dust of the 80s and 90s, such as funk, soul and the like. But there may still be hope, and it comes in the form of Anthoney Wright.
His single, No Me Without Me, takes a bow to the past masters; James Brown, Al Green, Teddy Pendergrass et al, but keeps it fresh and current, which could help him in the competitive charts of today. Elements of ska and reggae (as was mention in the album review for Wright) can also be heard, which gives this track something a little bit special and unique. While it may not be incredibly dynamic in terms of production or glorified for its incredible creativity, neither are many other songs out nowadays, and this track could do far worse. It does what good tracks of yore used to do; integrate the best of what was given from the past and transform it into something new for today and still retain listenability. I think Wright has done a fairly good job of it with this single.
With any luck, Anthoney Wright can get a decent amount of airplay and take soul to new heights in the 2010s.
Watch this space.
