There is no hiding the fact that Metro Station are a manufactured American Pop band, controlled by Sony, who expertly market them as the next big thing. A glance at Metro Station’s Myspace music player (metro station (cd out now) on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads) shows that each of Metro Station’s songs has over 5 million plays, with the top song having received 20 million. These kind of numbers are proof that Metro Station have been well manufactured, well managed, well marketed and well produced. Seriously though they are not every-ones cup of tea [mine included], but are perfect for 10-15 year old school girls to get themselves into Pop heaven. That is, four young, good looking, stylish rockers that sing to manufactured electro pop beats in the mould of a testosterone infused Kelly Clarkson or Avril Lavigne. The end product is that Sony are probably laughing all the way to the bank.

Metro Station’s album is full to the brim with radio friendly songs, all three minutes in length and concentrating strictly on subject matter such as girls, love, cigarettes and sexy dancing. It is hard to gather whether the Metro Station members play any instruments, but I would hazard a guess that Metro Station’s live show consists of a lot of pouting, hip swaying and blowing kisses to an adoring pre-pubescent crowd. Metro Station’s album flirts between standard pop fair, and bubblegum dance/electro pop. The stand out track (if you can call it that) is probably Track Two – Control. Where an electro infused backing track [with LFO automation to boot] is coupled with Enrique Englesias style crooning, which, in fairness, doesn’t sound like it has been heavily auto-tuned. Metro Station’s band members can all sing, pop stylee, and Track 5 – I Wish We Were Older is reminiscent of the Killers – Are We Human.

“I Wish We Were Older” combines dance music elements with lyrics such as “let your body move, the beat is pumping”. Yes, it really does venture that heavily into mature cheddar....cheese. The Metro Station album is Pop all the way to bank. It remains high energy throughout and never ventures away from that distinctly manufactured sound. Perhaps with some luck Metro Station may have a chance of becoming a modern day Pet Shop Boys, but I doubt it. Especially as it seems Metro Station don’t produce the music or play the instruments.

If you are looking for some glossy, teenage, disco pop, then the Metro Station album is a real contender. For me, personally, I will take lyrics from the closing Track Disco for my summation:

“I cant take this, I don’t like it”.
