Billy Vincent- Sugar and Soap [Single]

London Based five piece deserve merit for two things ; first for creating an extremely impressive debut single that requires the repeat button to be pressed constantly. Secondly for creating their own sub-genre, titled 'Dirty folk'. What a band needs to do to be dubbed 'dirty folk' is never explained, however I certainly wish more bands would follow in their stead. Lead by David Vincent and Billy Barrett the band deliver a brilliantly unique piece of folky pop that can't help but bring a smile to your face.

From the songs opening that instantaneously makes you think of a 60's Phil Spectre classic to the closing chords which are pure indie pop joy. The songs anthemic chorus is unfaultable and extremely catchy made even better by the lead singer’s slightly raspy voice that gives the song a real edge, and elevates what otherwise could be quite a bland song into a credible piece of contemporary pop music. The songs combination of old-skool drum beats and modern edgy guitar riffs make it stand out well beyond anything else out at the moment.

Although not the strongest debut single from a band, Billy Vincent have delivered something original and a sound very much lacking in the market at the moment. Their album is expected out at the end of this year and although a long way off, if the band continue to write songs of such a high standard they will find themselves onto everyone’s Ipods in 2010.

That really is a truly excellent piece of song-writing.
