Every now and again its nice to listen to something you normally wouldn't. Acoustic Folk? No thankyou he would normally say. Its really refreshing to open your ears to something different from the typical genres people attach themselfs too. Being an open minded individual myself when it comes to music, then who better to review Lau. Experimental Folk has never been a massive hit with the younger generation, bands such as Flogging Molly and Levellers seem to have been around for a while keeping the scene alive. Other than that, I personally haven't heard of any others. This makes it bloody hard to compare Lau to anyone. The band are a three piece from scotland that tore up the scene with their debut 'Lightweights and Gentlemen' by winning "Best Group" at the BBC folk awards in 2008. This release is another creative piece that will probably win them more awards in 2009.

Lau provide some relaxation in their instrumental (with some singing now and again) folk appetites. It's laid back and summery, at some points depressing. The music kind of reminds me of one of those medieval films, when the king is sat there tucking into a massive chicken leg. It also conjures up memories of Lord Of The Rings when they are all celebrating in the first and last film. This could well be a good film soundtrack.

Each song is chilled out and pleasing to the ears and gives you a sense of comfort. 'The Master' sounds musically similar to that of Enya [my favourite artist] with short stabs and plucking at an instrument i can't quite pin-point, maybe a mandolin? As with any Folk music you have the essential accordion being played, and it is absolutely torn to pieces by Martin Green with superb musicianship. The guitars, piano and fiddle all play their part successfully and leave a great imprint on the genre.

The album is wrapped, tucked and done deal'ed with a brilliant cover of The Beatles 'Dear Prudence'. This bonus track is a comfortable piece for Lau, the acoustic guitar sounds great and vocally they smash the already-a-masterpiece of a song.

Arc Light is definitely an aquired taste, if you like acoustic Folk then, Boom, this is your answer. Anyone else with an open mind and attitude should check this out.
