So the guitars start roaring and the drums are bashed and Computer Club are on the stereo. It is obvious that they have had an upbringing of Interpol, Joy Division and (I hate to say it) The Pigeon Detectives.
This is a mainstream indie song, no doubt. It’s very obvious, the melody and lyrics come at you in a most predictable fashion. ‘Turn The Lights Out’ is not a technically bad song, but in the coolness chart, it’s closer to hot soup than ice-cold pina- colada! The guitars are reaching, during the chorus the lyrics are similar to that of many a band before has written and the vocals are needy and despairing.
Computer Club could happily fit in with a playlist of Editors and White Lies. Your “cool” Auntie would like them, you may tap your feet to the song (when it’s inevitably played on Radio 1 at mid-day), but there is no chance that you would hear this song played anywhere…well… seriously cool.
