Mr Bones & The Dreamers are a Midlands six piece with an impressive array of support slots under their belt: Alabama 3, Elvis Perkins, Okkervil River, The Walkmen and The Hold Steady. They play a taut acoustic folk-indie topped off by Mr Bones (I presume) mournful quaver. They may be quite intense live (“creating an atmosphere of quasi-hysterical devotion” their record label claim), on record they are intensely restrained, all control rather than release.
'Are These Actual Miles?' has a folky, anthemic feel with a morose undertow but unfortunately it never quite takes off. It is dramatic and at times engaging but a bit hollow: the refrain "you're all that I loved" is chanted repeatedly at the song’s close but never really sounds sad (if that love has been lost) or jubilant (if still together) or even ambiguous or mysterious. Accompanying song 'Time To Rest' shows Mr Bones & the Dreamers getting closer to uniting their folky rhythms to emotional delivery; an acoustic Arcade Fire play stomping heart-wrench when it all works. So: promising, singular and mature but with a bit more growing to do to be truly memorable and to get the pulse racing.
