Ah
Vendor Defender at last you are out into the big wide world i.e. outside Glasgow not that there's anything wrong with Glasgow quite on the contrary as without it I fear you may have been an all-together different proposition - now you've plucked for the moniker of Spanish Pop/New Wave (yeah I know MySpace must give us all more options) and whilst I can see where you have come from on that topic I would have to say that this debut single '
Dreamphone' reminds me of The Strokes debut Modern Age EP there's the same rough-cut diamond sound with dominating bass and strawberry milkshake catchy hooks especially on second track '
Before' that truly delights in it's Television 70s sound that had me drooling, soggying my rich-tea before I'd managed to dunk it.
Opening track '
Dreamphone' stutters and stumbles into life before riding the crested (new) wave into view with it's Cure-esque pop and ooohhs and aaahhs that conjure up thoughts of the best summer holiday you ever had, you know the one with your first lady fumble and alcoholic outburst ah the joys (this is not a self-reflective moment by the way!). Giving way to the previously mentioned '
Before' that actually feels more like an after moment, after what I'm not sure but have a listen and feel free to whack in your own after moment.
'
The Island' comes on like an electro Velvet Underground with Zak making a fair stab at sounding like a more in tune Lou Reed duetting with Bowie seemingly on this track it's a stirring, heady mix of 70s iconoclast and well Casio. To round off with we get the Mariachi stomp of '
Justin' all plucks and strums and canon drum beats, it's the longest effort on show but fairly rattles along powered by the consistent guitar refrain that melts in your face.
For a debut single this really is a treat and is rather unexpected you'd take this as something pieced together over years of sweat and tears and more sweat by a band that have made their first few bob but
Vendor Defender have pounced from nowhere (Glasgow actually ladies and jelly-spoons) to release a debut so intact and full of insurmountable potential - I would suggest having a good old listen and then buying this as in years to come you'll be wanting to say you were there right at the start.
