Written by Natalie Imbruglia, performed by a man who frequently wears a flat cap; it’s difficult to have positive first impressions about ‘Ben’s Brother’s comeback single ‘Apologise’ but stay with me and maybe we can work through this one together. The main thing that seems striking about ‘Apologise’ is it’s nature of being a short, soft-pop track that almost passes over one’s head due to being incredibly neutral; i.e., it wouldn’t sound out of place in the background of ‘The OC’ or any other pathetically American high-school or college themed crock of shit.
That is not to say however, that this is a terrible track; in fact, Apologise is far from it. The bass punches through the typically arranged drums in the verse section beautifully and Jamie Hartman’s honey soaked voice is so soothingly light that you can’t help but to warm to him instantly.
Unfortunately though, my main issue with this track is the sheer vanilla-ness of it – it’s not bad, but also it’s not outstanding. I imagine that in the right time and place Apologise could mean an awful lot to somebody who would then truly connect with it, but for me it’s too light and fluffy to make an impact. Still on a less important note, we can all be thankful that Apologise isn’t spelt with an All American ‘z’ rather than a conservative, sensible, trusty good old British ‘s’.
