The Takeover UK have produced an interesting album with ‘Running with the Wasters’. The album opens with ‘The Lonely Ones’ which is an immediate disappointment. The Takeover UK sound like all the bad bits of the indie obsessed 90’s [think Silversun]. The track is a full blown 90’s nostalgia driven love-in with an overly heavy use of a saxophone.

Then dear reader, something amazing happens and I am won over by track two ‘Never been so sick’. This track is a relentless hip shaking slice of awesomeness. There are numerous key changes which highlight the multi layered nature of the track. The only criticism is that the song could have benefited by the inclusion of a longer instrumental breakdown. Also they made the brave decision so early on in the record to break out the tambourine but they failed to truly make full use of it. By track four The Takeover UK have started to find some style. ‘Running with wasters’ is an epic slice of indie rock which [if they make more tracks like this one] could showcase their bands abilities much more clearly. The track creeps up on you and makes you smile at its relentless melody. Towards the end of the album the songs just become so samey that you are left with a bitter taste in your mouth; as if you have somehow been transported back in time against your will when you were quite happy living here in 2009.

When listening to the album all the way through I just couldn’t shake the feeling of disappointment. The album is well produced, the songs are adequately executed but The Takeover UK seem to have nothing special to offer the listener. If they could perhaps produce more tracks like the two highlighted here then they would be worth pursuing further, as it stands right now they should probably be consigned to the indie dustbin of history and forgotten about.

Ouch! If they're new starters, they may get better? Perhaps they should only have released an EP.

You got to ask yourself though, is it harsh but fair? Probably.
