Nashville Pussy are quite frankly the best rock band I have ever seen live. I hadnt heard anything by them before the gig and I was left stunned. The energy, angst, high-kicks, tormenting screams and harmony was held together perfectly by the rhythm of Jeremy Thompsons pounding drums. Blaine Cartwrights voice howled through my ears like a dying dog and I felt like I was stumbling blind into a whiskey bar. It was a full speed rock and roll assault - there wasnt even time to breathe. The lights dulled and Tom Joness voice was blaring through the speakers singing "Whats New Pussycat?" with the infamous "pussy" quote from the movie "From Dusk Till Dawn" leading up to Nashville Pussys arrival.
Nashville Pussys stage presence was incredible - lightning bolts may as well have ripped from their guitars! These guys are real Rock and Roll and these days it can be difficult to find a band with authenticity but Nashville Pussy make up for every sucker rock band out there. Their set went by so fast and the band introduced only a few songs which were mostly from their new album "From Hell To Texas". These are the ones I caught;
- Hate and Whiskey
- Why Why Why
- Speed Machine
- Gimme A Hit Before I go
- Im So High and
- From Hell to Texas
Drummer Thompson didnt miss a beat and, as high as Cartwright apparently was, his performance was incredible - strong rhythm guitar and these screams that rip straight through your veins. Each chorus had a catchy hook and excellent backing vocals/harmonies. Karen Cuda was all attitude holding the backbone of the tracks with a rough and ready melody on bass.
The star of the show has to be Ruyter Suys on lead guitar. She played the whole gig with little regard for her own safety, raging with her guitar till the very end of the gig - then whilst writhing around on the floor she ripped the strings from her guitar. These were sold on the merchandise table as her used G-Strings. It was incredibly sexual and pure punk rock.
Nashville Pussy are the ultimate legends of Rock and Roll and I advise you all to go and watch them live NOW! After the fast Rock and Roll antics of Nashville Pussy, The Supersuckers really needed to step up to the mark and show the crowd that they deserve their self-proclaimed title of Greatest Rock and Roll band in the World.
As they walked on stage to rapturous applause from the dedicated fans who had come to see Eddie Spaghetti and his Motley bunch of Bastards, the crowd was clearly buzzing. The Supersuckers kicked off with "That is Rock and Roll" and there were plenty of stage antics to follow - holding it all together was the incredible guitarist Dan Thunder Bolton and drummer Scott Churilla.
It all seemed so right, they had all the ingredients to make it work: the crowds explosive energy, Bolton - giving it his all and rocking out in his corner of the stage - but somehow neither Eddie or Ron Heathman seemed that into it. Yes, Eddie Spaghetti looked the part with his trademark cowboy hat and sunglasses but he seemed to be a bit too big for his cowboy boots.
Yes, it was loud and fast but it was almost lazy.
Halfway through the set it was time for some country. Thankfully it was more Johnny Cash than Dolly Parton with Boltons strong guitar influence and Eddie Spaghettis dirty growls driving the songs. They must have played an impressive 20 plus songs from their incredible back-catalogue including tracks from the new album "Get It Together", and they drove through them quickly and professionally not wasting time to introduce songs. At the end of the set the adoring crowd were all singing and shouting along waiting for the expectant fake encore The Supersuckers are famous for. Instead they ploughed on to song after song.
Having waited for a long time to see The Supersuckers I was left wishing Id been more intoxicated so I wouldnt notice the lack of punch being delivered by The Supersuckers. Not every band invite the fans to give them the middle finger salute, but The Supersuckers not only invited the crowd to do it but relished in it and frankly, this time I enjoyed giving it.
