‘Trick of the Light’ is taken from The Maybes? debut album Promise and their name sets alarm bells ringing from the off. Firstly modern ‘The’ bands usually sound as original as their name suggests, and secondly bands who insist on adding punctuation marks in their title are questionable (no pun intended in this case). So once beyond the name, how does ‘Trick of the Light’ actually sound? Well the vocals are part The La’s (both John Power and Lee Mavers), part Richard Ashcroft; musically it’s very much the latter. There’s enough here to suggest this band could do very well indeed, melodic arpeggios, a vocal style that has already won over millions, and a chorus that soars high enough to make many a generic indie fan’s hairs stand on end. Of course what this all means is that there is also absolutely nothing new, so for anyone looking for any originality whatsoever, look elsewhere. It has the kind of chorus that leaves the listener in no doubt as to the song’s title. Subtlety is not The Maybe’s strong point it seems, but repetition certainly is. It’s due to this lack of subtlety, not to mention the lyrics (the singer mumbles something about “god”, “heaven” and “saints” throughout) that the band sound like one of those god-awful Christian rock bands. It’s for this reason more than any other that this song turns me off. There are no maybes about that at all. | | | | | Overall Rating | | 5 | | Vocals / Lyrics | | 4 | | Musicianship | | 6 | | Production | | 6 | | Creativity | | 5 | | Lastability | | 6 | | Reviewers Tilt | | 5 |
