'Until The Earth Begins To Part' is quite an apt title for the first offering by Broken Records on 4AD. There is something undeniably earthly, and rustic about their sound and 'Until The Earth Begins To Part'is the finest example to date. Beginning with a drunken pub piano plod and the sound of cockroaches wailing for supper, 'Until The Earth Begins To Part' is embellished with distant horns and a fine vocal that is both distinctive yet untraceable. After a minute there is the incoming rhythm section that serves to ratchet the track up a notch into a much more pacey and thriving sound. Mixing haunting landscapes, with the continuing enveloping sound of the horn section before some cascading guitars and crashing cymbals sees the track off into the night.
It is all very much the sound of the earth shifting gently and as such Broken Records chose the title well and have delivered a fine musical palette to feast your ears upon.
Backing track 'And They All Fell Into The Sea' continues the trend but at a much more generous canter. Applying some falsetto-esque vocals and strings to the ever expanding sound. To be honest, 'And They All Fell Into The Sea' deserves a lot better than being just a B-side. On the flipside, if 'And They All Fell Into The Sea' is a sample of the quality of a Broken Records B-Side then I am thoroughly excited to hear what on earth they have up their sleeves for the upcoming debut album - tasty treats a plenty one does hope.
