Sebastian R Komor is the Kommando, and here we are introduced to one of his side projects Komor Kommando. It is a 7 track EP which takes the listener into Hard Dance territory with a little side excursion into very dirty Breakbeat.
Komor has a growing list of production credits to his name, including Nine Inch Nails, and is seen as being close to the forefront of Industrial Dance Music. He is also known for his sound design work for a number of bands that includes Zombie Girl and Icon of Coil.
On listening to Das EP, we can see that Komor is quite a producer. All the tracks are well thought out, and nicely put together, and when played loud, create quite a noise! All the tracks on Das Ep have either a long well thought and produced intro, or a nice tail happy, sweaty outro and these are testament to the fact that Komor also works as a sound designer.
The straight 4/4 stuff on Das EP, Tracks 1 - “Love Your Neighbour”, 3 - “Trigger Finger”, 4 - “Beat Around The Bushes” and 6 - “Das Oontz” are pretty standard fair. In all these tracks Komor puts together tough unrelenting beats with a few witty vocal samples, and some strange noises, to create tracks that move, groove and hurt the ears. All the boxes ticked for Industrial Dance then. Track 6 Das Oontz, is probably the cleverest (say Oontz out loud and you will get the joke….), but they are not so clever to merit an applause. In reality though and in fairness the straight 4/4 stuff would probably keep and Industrial Dance floor moving well, and definitely keep it sweating.
However, when Komor starts to experiment with different beats, his production skills shine through. Track 2 - “State of Destruction”, 5 - “The Beat that goes Ping” and 7 - “ Antikrist” are proper hard electro/dirty breakbeat tracks that could just as easily be mixed into a Dubstep set or Industrial Dance set. Komor also brings some of his production tricks to the party, with stuttering and twisted trance strings, short snappy and effective vocal samples and hard edgy, distorted beats and synthesizer lines.
All in all there is not much I can say that is wrong with Das EP, I wouldn’t personally buy it, cause it is not completely my thing, but I am sure that in Belgium, Germany, Holland and Poland, where some listen to this stuff for breakfast, Das EP will go down a treat. I will also say that Sebastian R Komor shows some nice production craft In his music and the bands that he works with, I am sure will agree.
