Schwarzblut are a Dutch group that have released their debut EP on Alfa-Matrix Records, the Belgium based label that is home to all things dark, noisy, shouty and electronic. The press releases describe Schwarzblut as a “blend of romantic melancholic Weimar poetry with danceable dark electronic music”, fairly interesting start….. The Sehlenwolf EP is a mix of electro body-rock music that contains unaldulterated trance elements, Kraftwerk inspiration and female vocal Synth-Pop music. The Opening Track “Der Absheid” is definitely deep in EBM territory and, in fairness, the song had a nice rhythmic chug to it. It is led by a male vocal, and when the big trance strings come in, Schwarzblut sound like a darker, edgier Scooter. Track Two “Naehe Das Geliebten” is where the SehlenWolf EP starts to get interesting. The female vocal gives the track a haunting, distressed feel, dripping both with sexiness and emotion, but alas, at three minutes the song breaks into big arpeggiated trance strings that let down the whole song. Tracks 3 - “Muss es einen Trennung gehen” is a breakbeat song, that along with Track 4, take the Sehlenwolf EP back into Scooter territory with big, shouty distorted vocals and big trance strings ( I have heard enough of this type of sound to last me till Christmas).
On track 4- “Kontrast”, Schwarzblut start to feel like a dirty German Synth-Pop-Breakbeat Band, which is quite an interesting concept for some and also makes me think that they might be quite a hit in their native Holland. I am sure that Schwarzbluts’ live shows are full of energy, dancing, sweating, as well as pill munching Dutch EBM heads all nodding their head and putting their hands in their air for those big trance lead moments. Track 5 – “Daemmr ung senkte sich von oben” is where Schwarzblut return to the female led sound, which I must admit I kind of like. It has a beat and rhythm that is once again inspired by Kraftwerk and it is on these types of songs that Schwarzblut are an exciting prospect. It is a shame that there are only two of these types of songs on the Sehlenwolf EP. Perhaps as time passes they will embrace this type of sound more, drop the Scooter inspired trance elements, and thus have a chance of having much wider an appeal.
