 People may not think of Trail of Dead as an obvious ‘singles band’, but they have produced anthemic moments on albums to date. Songs such as “The Rest Will Follow” and “Let it Dive” were fist-pumpers of the grandest scale (a scale the band certainly like to work on), and their latest album The Century of Self had two in the title track and “Fields of Coal”. Trail of Dead don’t really follow pop conventions as a rule though, and so “Isis Unveiled” is the rather unusual choice for the first single to be lifted from The Century of Self.
As the album version was six minutes and twenty seven seconds long, the label have had to shave a couple of minutes off the track for the sake of radio play. The only reason I don’t think the label made the decision on the song itself is because after their problems with Interscope, it’s unlikely Trail of Dead will allow their new home (small German label Superball) to call such shots. Besides, just listen to the track and you’ll see it’s not really a ‘label choice’.
The single featues both the ‘Radio Edit’ and the album version, so you get to hear Isis Unveiled in its full glory; and glorious it most certainly is. Forgive me for quoting myself, but my opinion hasn’t changed since my album review so here’s what I said back then:
“Sounding like the soundtrack to the chariot race of the Gods, it gallops along at a frightening early pace before slowly grinding to a standstill in the middle like the wheels of some huge vehicle of war. Of course TOD couldn’t possibly leave it there, and so they explode back into life for a finale of the grandest scale. It all soundtracks an extremely heady lyrical subject, that of an early Christian sect who believed in two biblical gods – the Old Testament God, and the God of Christ from The New Testament who overthrew the old Testament God; ‘I Kissed a Girl’ this is not.”
