At first, I don’t really understand the point behind the somewhat saddening, slightly depressing, and definitely repulsive family snap on the front of Delta Spirit’s latest single, People C’mon, until I realise this is just what the 5 guys from San Diego do for their album covers:

After inserting the two-track disc into my stereo to give Delta Spirit the benefit of doubt, and upon hearing the mellow yet infectious intro to track ‘People C’mon’, I decide I quite like the quirkiness that Delta Spirit seem to encompass. An impeccably timed handclap and squeal from lead vocalist, Matthew Vasquez, compliment the already soulful and attractive track.

Confirming my “quirky” description, I find that the single, and also the full-length album from which the tracks are taken, Ode to Sunshine, were recorded at a cabin in Julian, California, out in the desert east of San Diego. I’m not really sure what exactly this brought to the recordings but, whatever it was, it seemed to work, as the actual musical ability on the short but sweet disc is of an extremely high quality.

My only problem with the single as such, is that the only other track is an instrumental version of ‘Trashcan’, which is a fine tune in theory, but having it follow the perfectly executed and outwardly upbeat ‘People C’mon’ makes it seem less than it actually is.

Pulling it all back to determine the basic point of a single, where I try to decide whether it has coaxed me into wanting more from Delta Spirit, my answer, considering it hangs solely on first track ‘People C’mon’, is nonetheless a resounding YES.
