Last year saw the release of William’s debut album Self in Fiction, which received largely positive reviews. This year they make the rather strange, almost backward move of releasing a mini album, Slightly Delighted, but hey, there are no rules on this kind of thing and their fans will be tickled pink to get their hands on anything new. Now I must confess that I don’t already number amongst their ranks, as William have so far completely passed me by. Question is though – am I a fan now? Not especially. Firstly I should point out that I don’t have any problem with the vocals, a sticking point and cause of irritation for many. Singer/guitarist Gavin Housley produces a rather high-pitched vocal delivery when excited, which I can see will not be to everyone’s taste, but it never stumbles over the line into irksome for me. Opening track “Youngun” is rather unremarkable, with tousled guitar lines that are a little too reminiscent of The Libertines to be heard as an individual sound or style. The guitars on second track “Headscream” actually sound like early Cribs, not much of a departure at all and still not hallmarked as William’s. Despite guitars so sharp, Williamare actually far morepenetrating when they stop jabbing so hard. “Tacit” is reminiscent of fellow Londoners Fanfarlo at their most delicate; a simple, melodic song comprised of just vocals and a ukulele. It’s just a shame that the best track is also the shortest at just one and half minutes long; there was certainly a peak to be conquered yet. The only other track to really impress is also one that moves at a pace that allows time for clarity and definition; thankfully though final track “Memory Net” is also long enough tocolour inside the outline. Some bands simply work better within certain levels, a certain pace or volume for example, and William are a band that produce the most when it seems like they are putting the least in; when the pace and volume are lowered you get to hear just how good they could be. Track List: 1. Youngun
2. Headscream
3. Tacit
4. Midi
5. Foreshore
6. Memory Net
