On discovering TV On The Radio on the late great MTV2’s 120 mins, I immediately fell for their unique sound. No matter what they release you just have to like it, even if it’s the most diverse non-mainstream collective of sounds, it will still get a play on Radio 1.
“Crying” provides yet another distinctly catchy piece featuring hand claps and funky guitars. Lead singer Tunde Adebimpe does his usual job of wowing the listener with his ability to transport you to another planet with his vocals. There is a certain warmth and charm that comes with TV On The Radio, it’s really, really hard not to like them. Their use of subtle strange samples and synths curling around the speakers confuse and disrupt your trail of thought. They make you listen to the record, no room for background music here. This is the second track taken from their parabolic album ‘Dear Science’. Great choice on using this song as a single, I’m sure it will hit the dance floors with no trouble.
The two B-sides attached to this single have got it just right. ‘Shout Me Out (Willie Isz Remix by Jneiro Jarel)’ has a gentle build up with some very cool glitchy vocal snippets smashed across the musical spectrum. Now for something absolutely intense, and for me one of my favourite remix’s to date of ‘Red Dress’. This dirty, banging, gritty noise gated wanderlust is produced by The Glitch Mob. When it kicks in at 1min31 it blows your socks off. With a SebastiAn electro restyle and Soulwax genius this is definitely top trumps for the dance scene. The contrast from the original is quite astonishing, as it has quite a latino feel.
The 4ad label has got it sorted, this is to be just the start of what seems to be a hugely successful career for TV On The Radio. Tracks:
