“The People Or The Gun” is a welcome return for Anti-Flag, they have been relatively quiet since the 2008 release of “The Bright Lights of America”. As expected, track one of Anti-Flag’s new album, interestingly titled “Sodom, Gomorrah, Washington D.C. (sheep in shepherds clothing)” leaps into action after a confusing first few seconds of feedback. The vocals on the song are slightly too shouty and this, to a certain degree detracts from what would otherwise be a very cleverly constructed opening track.

Anti-Flag are at their best as a musical collective when they slowly build a track around the exquisite sound of lead vocalist Justin Sane. This point is highlighted by the excellent instant sing-along beauty of track two “The Economy Is Suffering... Let It Die”. An extended guitar solo makes this a true stand out track, a song that deserves to be played on repeat with the volume turned all the way up to 11!

Track six “This Is The First Night” is awesome, it is a true anthem dedicated to friendship, being in a band and just being young and doing whatever the hell you want to do. I got chills listening to this song, it makes you appreciate life, love and friendships . The true beauty behind the song is summed up in the lyric “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, oh no, all I know is that I am alive”.

With their 2008 album Anti-Flag seemed to be heading down the well trodden path of selling out and going a bit pop punk, however with this album they seem to have pulled themselves back from the brink and returned to their politicised angry punk rock roots. “The People Or The Gun” shows a high level of musical progression. Anti-Flag are still wearing their political views on their sleeves but they seem to be more expertly encased within well crafted build ups and expertly timed break downs. The whoa whoa, hey heys , breakneck bass lines and sing-along choruses are all present and correct.

This album deserves to be a huge hit for Anti-Flag and I urge you to play this record damn loud all summer long. Play the album with the people you love and for a few minutes dance away your troubles.
