Daniel Merriweather - Red [Single]

Daniel Merriweather - Red [Single]

Allido/Columbia

Official Mark Ronson BFF Daniel Merriweather had a choice lying before him after the success of 'Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before' - use his quite brilliant voice to do something a little off kilter and different, or pretend he was Stevie Wonder and belt out wet, insipid, self-pitying break up songs. Guess which way he went on 'Red'.

Can you blame him though? Signed to a major, touring the world as under-card on the Kanye carnival - must be a hell of a ride. Who cares if all you're singing are instantly forgettable mass marketed super clean ballads?

Okay, 'Red' is nice enough in a non offensive way but you don't really even notice it's there until you hear the strings lifted nearly wholesale from Ben E King's 'Stand By Me' and by then it's almost over. Problem here is there is not one original or interesting moment in the entire song. That would be forgivable if it had a chorus you could hum but as it stands, this is just a waste of everyone's time.

Daniel's debut album 'Love and War' is coming out soon and with any luck this will help salvage some dignity but he's got his work cut out if he wants me back on side.
