Belgium duo Soy un Caballo have teamed up with English folkies This is the Kit for a new multilingual split single. Having ‘collaborated’ this way with experimental folk band Tungg before – Tungg translated Caballo’s ‘Robin’ into English and released a single containing the original version as well – this time it’s the other way round; the Belgians covered This is the Kit’s ‘Birchwood Beaker’ and gave it a little French tint.

Impressed by the magical feeling of the original – according to Caballo’s Thomas van Cottom it makes you feel close to a flying angel – he and musical sister Aurelie Muller decided to make ‘Birchwood Beaker’ a bit more filmic. Though for some the lyrics are a bit harder to follow when translated into French, musically Soy un Caballo actually do succeed in creating their own film while staying true to the original.

Now performed as a duet and with help of the ‘natural’ sound of the flute, sweet, tender horns plus guitar and organ, ‘A Travers la Neige’ remains the dreamy collage This is the Kit originally produced. Though the voices of van Cottom and Muller aren’t as outstanding as the Kit’s Kate Stables, on a musical level the French version is much richer in its sound. When listening to the song you can actually imagine yourself traveling through the beautiful, deserted wintery landscape.

The single ‘A Travers la Neige’ contains both the original and the French version, but not for a moment do you really feel that you’re listening to the same song twice. It doesn’t happen that often that a cover song creates the same kind of atmosphere as the original version yet still feeling original, but Soy un Caballo truly made it happen.

This is the Kit should be knighted for the fact that they create that wonderful atmosphere with one singer, an acoustic guitar and percussion only. But Soy un Caballo should be knighted as well; for covering a perfect song and making it an added value.
