As The Path Unfolds is the debut full length release from finish folk metalers, Crimfall. Crimfall is a young Finish act who is the brainchild of Jakke Viitala, who started writing and creating the music he wanted to create. Jakke was later joined by a male and a female vocalist who helped complete the writing of As The Path Unfolds. The instrumentation for As The Path Unfolds was mainly performed by session players and comprises of your typical rock band with added strings, accordion and other various extras and effects. The quality of the playing is clearly heard and although this may have been Crimfall’s debut release it seems that there was no expense spared for the quality of this release.

As The Path Unfolds is a rather strange mix of sounds in that at some points it sits in to pretty standard metal grooves and at other it sounds like the soundtrack to a Lord of the Rings film, doing a jig around a may pole. The transactions are always smooth and the vocal performances are always sterling, varying from metal growls to operatic symphonic lead vocals. There is an air of cheese surrounding certain elements and if your not entirely happy with the idea of your orks running in to battle then Crimfall may not be the band for you, but if you like nothing more than donning a plastic sword and running round your garden dressed like a homeless person, screaming “aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggg gghghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” then you may rather like this.

All the effects go in to great elaborate detail as if to sound like actually being a proper film soundtrack. The problem is to whether this is an album or a film soundtrack. I would have actually thought this material may have actually been better used in a film. Tracks ‘Where Waning Winds Lead’ and ‘The Crown Of Treason’ have great sing along choruses and would appeal to many different audiences and could be likened to Nightwish or something similar. As The Path Unfolds may be a mixture of styles and may be deemed a bit too much for the average metal fan, but there are some really great crossover points and the great production makes it very listenable.
