There was a song I heard at Faith No More last week that can describe the band Asphyx: Reunited. Why Reunited you ask? Consider this: this band have split [over the course of twenty years] THREE times! However, this reunion seems to be the strongest yet.
Unlike some death metal bands that try and start things off with some kind of different and "cool" intro "Death... The Brutal Way" just kicks you square in the groin and says ‘LISTEN TO THE BRUTALITY!’. It carries on doing so throughout the entire album with it’s fast paced style over the course of it's 49 minute running time.
The vocals remind me of the old-school death metal seen in the days of the Lords Of Chaos movement (but without the satanic connotations) which Martin Van Drunen brings to the table. There are some elements of Dimmu Borgir briefly on the intro of the track "Black Hole Storm" that doesn’t last very long before the ‘BRUTALITY!’ kicks back in! The guitar solos bring back the days of the 90’s Death Metal scene as well as Napalm Death’s signature Grindcore sounds.
For fans of death metal expect this album to be high on your best of list for 2009, as the album lives up to the title’s promise of death, the brutal way.
An interesting listen but this is not for everyone!
