Doom Metal is a weird genre [I have to admit]. Back in the nineties it didn’t appeal to me that much, granted that era was the rise of nu-metal and the majority of us were likely to be into Limp Bizkit and the like [think how kids are with Bring Me The Horizon now for example].
Fast forward to a few years later and I discovered Opeth. The combination of Progressive coupled with Doom was a nice mixture [think the stuff that Steve Wilson produced more than Orchid].
Why do I bring Opeth up in a review of Isole’s album you may ask?
"Silent Ruins" is VERY reminiscent of the Opeth albums that were released after Blackwater Park with the melodic and clean singing from the vocalist under the Doom backing but with an added twist.
That twist being that (and this came to my attention from the usual voice-over that Napalm put on their promotional CDs, which is where the redemption part in the title of this review comes in) it’s a concept album… way to go progressive!
As an album though "Silent Ruins" isn’t as bad as it reads. The production is done well and the band itself do know how to do Doom Metal very well so it is definitely worth a listen for fans of the genre. However, while I do like "Silent Ruins" until Isole try not to be an Opeth copycat band to this degree I may just stick listening to Opeth!
Overall a good album for fans of Opeth and Doom Metal in general, that is if they can get past the almost copycat comparison.
