If you could grab an american teen wanna be and wack him in the jingleys as hard as you could, stick him in front of a mic, set him alongside some other haircut emo's and you will eventually stumble across Never Say Never. The lyrics are bad, the voice is annoying and the music is basic. Plus this guy's hair seems to have its own personality.
This is pop at its most annoying, even "gimme more" from Britney sounds more appealing. Chrisofer Drew does have a voice that make most girls dribble, he should probably consider joining Jonas Brothers. The notes that are hit throughout The Summer EP conjure up thoughts of "this guy blatantly is a girl" if not for the husky moments of manlyness. The six tracks flow nicely into one another with some glistening production. It's just a darn shame about the material. All credit goes forward to Drew to a very mature, well thought up marketing pop record. Speaking of which, whoever pushes his myspace must have some unknown talent, Never Say Never's media player has over 63 million plays, astonishing. Even our well respected and sadly missed King Of Pop Micheal Jackson has only 37.
American winy pronunciation is one of the most irritating parts of the music industry. Blink 182 are bad for it, but can pull it off, plus they were actually good back in the day. After this there seemed to be a flurry of cant-pronounce-lyrics-without-wining about the emo/pop/punk/acoustic pop scene. Now this guy for instance can't even say "Sailer" (as in "sayler") in 'Simple Enough'. Terribly annoying. Along with the elongated "lllloooong", "lllove" and the worst of the bunch, a "do do do". A more subtle progression in song writing is 'On The Brightside' featuring Drews vocals popping up and down the musical spectrum alongside a Plain White T's - 'Hey There Delilah' fashion type thingy. This is therefore quite bearable as the appreciation for vocal talent is never undermined.
The good news kids is that this is only an EP, so six tracks is palatable, just. If there is an album in the works please don't spread the word, or at least not to me. Any of you (and there is obviously millions) that like this style of music like Hellogoodbye and Plane White T's will be in your element with Never Say Never, or in my case ALWAYS say never to this. | | | | | Overall Rating | | 2 | | Vocals / Lyrics | | 3 | | Musicianship | | 4 | | Production | | 9 | | Creativity | | 2 | | Lastability | | 5 | | Reviewers Tilt | | 1 |
