Black Lips - I'll Be With You [Single] Now this band seem to be everywhere. Alot of hype built up around them prior to their release and tour followed by some rave reviews. This still is completely alien to listeners like myself. Black Lips just sound like a bunch of piss heads coming home from a late one. This might just be one of those artists that just cant be "got" and "understood musically" or one of those really annoying ones where critics say they are "ahead of their time". Thats just bull dooey. More like the band members have taken wayyy too many horse tranq's. 'I'll be with you' sounds like a Beach Boys vinyl being played backwards extremely slooowly. Along with every member absolutely stonked of a joint or two. Whether this is intentional for them to release a don't give a shit record or I've just completely missing the point. Please tell me if I'm out of order here, but Black Lips are pretty weak. This two and a half min walk into hippyville is clangy, clingy and unsettling. With lead singer Cole Alexander gargling and retching out the lyrics "i'll be with you", which does in turn sound as if the guy is hurting or pining for his lover. The song is actually about a dear friend of Jared. Live this band are probably one of the best acts to see, but this release is too much, it plays no role in any part of decent song writing. As popular as they are they still haven't won over my ears. |

I really dig their low fi fuck-it-let's-go sound and their surprise gems like Bad Kids that pop out when they can be arsed to stay sober in the studio long enough to pull shit together. It's far from pristine but who wants neat and tidy rock and roll? Bono. That's who. |

Re: Black Lips - I'll Be With You [Single] Condo Fucks are a little bit too li-fi for me. The melody gets a little too lost. Their cover of 'With a Girl Like You' is almost killer - just a shame you can barely make out the fantastic melody that The Troggs created. I did wonder why you don't like The Black Lips, yet you really liked Condo Fucks. I think maybe you should try another Black Lips album, Jack. |
