Over the past few years electro dance has progressed onto another level of bass drum production and damn right dirty bass lines. If anyone has ever experienced Soulwax live they will know what I'm Holla'ing about. The only thing with this, like any phase in the industry is where and what next? What more progression can be accomplished after a bass drum that sounds like it has been fluffed by god himself.
Killa Kella is apparently the best beat boxer on the planet, you be the judge of that statement (Rahzel springs to mind). As for this single 'Built Like An Amplifier' there isn't a wholelotta Boxing his beats happening. There are some smashing samples and pumped up production. Texturally the whole song has Does It Offend You Yeah? written all over it, with jaulty drums and synth powered by a sea of anxious vocals. In fact this does actually just sound like a Does It Offend You Yeah? track with Kella as featuring vocalist. Surprisingly enough lead singer and up-coming producer James Rushent (from DIOYY funnily enough) guides Kella into this musical mould and comes out all guns blazing.
Remix's from Martin Rushent, Dave Spoon and Sway build a stronghold around Killa Kella as he prepares his debut album. Rushents rework is quite lazy as it pretty much sounds exactly the same as the original. Spoon's rework is more like a "refuck" with dancability oozing at every beat. I'm sure Annie Mac will be pumping this over the airwaves through the summer to no avail. Sway does his usual "ting" by taking the backing track and rapping over the top, which is cool in his Sway way. I don't want to mess up anybodys "swagger" here but the production sounds a little weaker, as if the levels aren't quite right at some points from music to vocals ratio.
The good news is both DIOYY? and Killa Kella are creative electro beast that never get tiring. 'Built Like An Amplifier is head bopping stuff, with just enough aggression to almost go for the full head bang, but no devil horns as yet.
