The Rumble Strips - Welcome To The Walk Alone [Album]

The Rumble Strips - Welcome To The Walk Alone [Album]

Island

Mark Ronson seems to be making an appearance all over the music scene at the moment. Sticking his production mitts all over the big names; the likes of Amy Winehouse, Robbie Williams, Lily Allen and now his newest by The Rumble Strips. There is no debate as to the quality of his works, but obviously it isn't to everyone's taste.

The Rumble Strips do a great job of creating an album that seems to play quicker than Usain Bolt. Put 'Welcome To The Walk Alone' in the stereo box, blink a few times and the album is over. A thirty one minute, eleven track album. Thus concluding that they have successfully made background music for a dinner party.

Charlie Waller belts out a unique vocal throughout 'Welcome To The Walk Alone'. From time to time it can get a little frustrating, playing on that ever present 'London Sound' in the industry at the moment. 'London' pushes his vocal boundary to a high pitched squeal that seems to be just outside his comfort zone. He then shows his magic once again on the catchy little diddy; 'Not The Only Person', stretching out his vocal chords to the max. For some reason Morrissey springs to mind and moments of The Stranglers in Charlie's voice, a cocky arrogance is also a layer in there. As an overall package it definitely works well.

The Rumble Strips give off this sort of fresh sound, the kind of music you could listen to in the morning as a wake up album. The visions of London in the summer and road trips spring to mind throughout. 'Raindrops' and 'Dem Girls' bust out the trumpets in a vision of ska pop along with Babyshambles/Libertines tempo and sluggish vocals. More influences fly in and out throughout the whole album, some of the vocal harmonies sound a little like The Beach Boys and that work to great effect.

This is British pop through and through, The Rumble Strips have definitely done a good job, with or without Mark Ronson. Lets hope the lads don't have to go to rehab after working with him.
