Normals Welcome
Music these days is rich with experimentation, whether it be with their choice of musical genre crossovers, or actual band line up and instrument choice. Although the aforementioned experimentation seems to happen all the time nowadays, no band seems to have taking to it quite like Shout Out Out Out Out. Shout out out out seem to put a whole new spin on this idea with a 6 member strong line up consisting of 2 drummers and 4 bass players as well as an army of analogue synthesizers sure to make any dance music fanatic start ‘popping shapes’.
The band itself hails from Edmonton, Canada which is a major city with a bit of a reputation as having little prospects and possibilities for muso's. This ‘harsh reality’ however hasn’t seemed to have a negative influence on these guys and doesn’t seem to come across at all in the music that Shout Out Out Out Out make.
Their newest album, ‘Reintegration Time’ is rich with techno brilliance, with each track being packed with excellent rhythmic beats, dance-like bass lines, as well as superbly produced lead synths. Although all these elements are present in 'Reintegration Time', the final result isn’t like the works of Lady Gaga or any other of today’s dance/pop mainstream artist. Instead, we seem to have been given an upbeat, but somewhat relaxing piece of music that is obviously created using some knowledge of great production techniques. The prime example of this being the very clever drum and finger clicking rhythmic building up on the track ‘Guilt trips sink ships’, which although subtle and basic, is very effective. Of course, there are countless other examples, this is just one of many.
Although 'Reintegration Time' is a brilliant piece of music to check out, I would say that it probably isn’t for everyone. If you’re a fan of any of the rave or techno trance based music that’s out there, then I'd suggest that you skip over 'Reintegration Time' and move along. This is a great listen don’t get me wrong, but its slow tempo, combine with that 80’s style synths and vocals which makes 'Reintegration Time' one of the more chilled out and relaxed album that I have experienced out there today.
Although this isn’t bringing anything particularly new to our ears, I still would suggest a listen.
