This straight up Indie Rock outfit “Outraze” hail from Banbury in the United Kingdom (where is that??) and cite The Who, Oasis, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones as their influences. Easy to guess then, what this single, 'Under The Influence', will be like. Released in early June, 'Under The Influence' is a “chorus of sweeping, breathless rock”.
'Under the Influence' begins and the listener is immediately transported back to a moody, driving Joy Division-esque coupling of Guitar and Drums, which opens up into a proper rock number, sprinkled with gentle vocal harmonies and a big lead guitar piece which all build very nicely indeed.
The chorus line “Don’t lose your love in the confusion” is effective and is enhanced by a well played and well engineered lead guitar line. The first chorus is followed by a nicely restrained middle eight, showing that the band know all about dynamics and arrangement, which is so key to good “rock and roll”.
The lead singer of Outraze, Andy White, sounds more than a bit like the lead singer of Nickleback which is not completely a bad thing in this instance, although I doubt [I hope] whether Andy uses the same vocal enhancers.
It is rare these days to get a single song release, and I was somewhat surprised that there was not at least one other track on the CD. Even a “live” recording would not have gone astray, but perhaps 'Under the Influence' is being used more as an album taster, or perhaps a radio demo.
'Under the Influence' in all honesty, is standard indie-rock fare, but that does not make it bad. If you look at the success of bands like Kasabian, you are left believing that Outraze certainly deserve a slice of that success.
'Under the Influence' is nicely produced, well arranged and sounds clean and distinct, even if the fade out at the end was bit lazy.
