An Horse - Rearrange Beds [Album]

An Horse are no strangers to sudden success. After their very first show they were instantly hurled on tour throughout the US, shortly followed after by a tour opening for Death Cab for Cutie in Australia, and their success has showed no signs of slowing since their formation in July of 2007.

I’m going to just admit, that even though I’m not usually a massive fan of this style of music, I was intrigued from the second I hit the play button. Pigeon-holing An Horse isn’t an easy task. They seem to have created a somewhat new and exciting sound, with a mixed styling of folk, grunge and rock. Although there are only two members (Kate Cooper and Damon Cox), their latest musical offering, ‘Rearrange Beds’, gives you the impression that they are your average 4 or 5 piece band, this in itself highlights how musically diverse An Horse actually are.

‘Rearrange Beds’ jumps right in the deep end with the upbeat opening track ‘Camp Out’ which sets the tone for the majority of the album to follow. All in all, ‘Rearrange Beds’ is a moderate tempo album, providing a steady mood with a few softer numbers such as ‘Little Lungs’, which is a slower, and somewhat balled like track. The folk style vocals of Kate Cooper give the album a soft and relaxed mood throughout, it seems to be the instruments that provide the gritty edge giving them an interesting mix of both hard and soft (much like that of the Pixies quiet-loud sound in the early 90’s).

'Rearrange Beds' might not appeal to those of us who like the heavier side of the music world, as it definitely seems to appeal more to followers of Indie and Acoustic scenes. If however, you feel like listening to a fresh chilled out but still upbeat sound, then An Horse are definitely going to be right up your street.

Fair play that's some crazy artwork. Looks quite dark, but based on your review they don't sound like they are. Are they dark in an indie kind of way?

i wouldnt say they are dark really. they are a little indie, but its more folk-like. and as its a female singer aswell, it makes it sound a little like kate nash in a few ways (well i think so)
