Hassle / Big Scary Monsters
Blakfish have been described as genre busting in the press and with their punk / hardcore / progressive mixture that description seems very apt!
The trend amongst British bands this year is 'fight the injustice and the ignorant' and we have seen bands succeed with it e.g. Gallows and some not so well e.g. the Enemy (I'm sorry but a frontman that claims he saw the recession coming?! If he did why didn't he try to do something about it?!)
Blakfish are grouped nicely in the Gallows group of revolutionists [luckily for them]. Their tracks have all sorts of digs at things that have been happening from their opening track which is attacking the credit crunch 'Economics', scenesters are mocked in 'Your Hair's Straight But Your Boyfriend's Not' and the music industry as a whole in 'Ringo Starr- 2nd best drummer in the Beatles' which also gives a dissection and you can truly feel the anger seeping through the vocals.
The mixture of hardcore and progressive also reminds me of a pre-'Puzzle' Biffy Clyro in which the screams will kick in followed by solos that are also brilliantly handled. Lyrically Blakfish also try to be more of the solution to the problem rather than just destroying everything (which is the bad point on the latest Gallows release).
'Champions' is a bright debut album from a band that will hopefully gain a huge following in 2009/2010. Watch this space.
